Going with the Flow!

Standard

(Watch this…it’s AWESOMENESS)

After reading Shannon Messenger’s post today about Trusting the Path, I felt as if I wasn’t completely alone. This week has been incredible writing-wise. I broke through my writers block YAY. But what happened when I broke through came totally out of left field. My MC defied me. The nerve of her, right?

When I sat down and plotted out my new book, Storybook High (working title) I had a plan. I had three acts mapped out and a game plan. I knew it. This would happen, then this, then this, etc. I was writing fine, hammering out chapter by chapter by chapter and then somewhere around the midway point, my mind went blank. I knew where I wanted to go but I had no clue how to get there.

So after a week of nothing, I sat down and forced myself to break through and let Norah do what she wanted. And BAM writers block gone. But as it happened, what Norah wanted wasn’t what I wanted. She had her old plan, her own feelings and I couldn’t force her feelings in the direction I wanted. I know some people might not get this, they’d say—“Well, you’re the writer, do whatever you want.”—but it SO doesn’t work like that. That’s like saying I can force my husband to like curry because I want him too. Yeah, no.

By time I *really* realized her defiance, it was too late. I ran over to my writing girls and was freaking out…because I didn’t know what to do. I had a plan!!!!! But they all told me to go with it, just see where she takes me. I did. I am. And let me tell you, she is taking me to some really crazy places now and I’ve never been so flipping energized before!! I know there are way too many exclamation points in this post but I’m excited and nervous and biting my nails as I write every word now because I’m no longer in control, she is.

I guess that’s the difference between forcing a character to do something and letting them make their own decisions. I guess what I’m saying now, writers, is this: sometimes we can plan and plan all we want. We can spend hours in outlines but the real decisions come when the characters are in motion. When the stakes are high and choices have to be made and sometimes they make the wrong ones. Sometimes they go down a different path and sometimes…just sometimes…they kiss boys they shouldn’t.
So, now I have a different plan. It’s still rough and in need of tweaking and flushing out, but I think this plan may be better than the last.

I’ll end with this…let your characters defy you. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Ciao~

P.S, leaving you with this funny rap from Chris August.LOVE IT.

Storybook High

Standard

“Now that you’re here, now that they know you exist, you’ll never be free again. Ever. We’re prisoners to our books, our fates planned long before we were born.”

- Storybook High (working title), current WIP

Currently I am querying my latest novel, THE SCARLETT LULLABY, a YA twist on the classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. but this post isn’t about Scarlett, this post is about Norah, the MC in my newest novel, the one I’ve been pouring myself into so I don’t think about queries and requests and the waiting game.

Finally, after months of silence, I’m ready to tell you just a little about her.

When nomad teen Norah and her suicidal half-sister are sent to a boarding school in Germany, they’re shocked to learn that their classmates are characters from storybooks. What sucks worse than a psycho obsessive Cinderella as a roommate? Falling in love with a prince who is destined for someone else. And acting on her forbidden desire could re-write the history of our beloved fairy tales forever. Norah soon learns that some princess will do anything to keep their stories safe. Even if it means death.

Think Wicked meets Once Upon a Time meets Sky High with Mean Girls sprinkled in.  This has been so much fun to write thus far. Norah is funny and witty and sarcastic and I love every second of her. Not to mention my supporting character are a blast–Goldilocks, The Big Bad Wolf, Cinderella, Prince Charmings….

To read the first 250 words, check out my BOOKS/PROJECTS  page.

Oh, and here is a picture of the beautiful castle in Germany which inspired my story.

At the speed I’m going, I should be ready to query by this summer.

In other news, May is going to be a super busy month. One friend graduating from law school, other friends having babies, maybe I’ll get in on the mix by snagging an agent. (A girl can hope, right? lol)

Pitch-ilicious Entry

Standard

GAH, sorry I am behind putting this up. Would I be excused if I said I was up all night reading a fabulous book? Because I was. lol.

I had a REALLY hard time choosing what story I wanted to pitch, but I am going to pitch my YA urban fantasy THE SCARLETT LULLABY. It is a twist off the fairytale Sleeping Beauty.

Pitch:

Scarlett Lux feels like enough of a freak when she starts having premonitions of death, let alone learning she has light sparking from her hands. To top that off, her sort-of ex-boyfriend Mason Salvatore, prince of the Assassins, and Sebastian Andersson, a sexy guardian, can’t spend two seconds together without fighting. Scarlett really doesn’t need boy drama right now; not when the Majester is trying to kill her for her light—the power to melt the barriers between earth, heaven and hell—and everyone else has mistaken her for a missing hundred-year-old princess.

Have at it.

Can’t wait to read yours!!

Splintered by A.G Howard

Standard

Guess what ladies and gents?

The cover for Splintered by the amazing A.G. Howard is HERE!! Not only that, but there are some fantastic giveaways…and who doesn’t love giveaways? I know I do.

For sixteen years, Alyssa Gardner has lived with the stigma of being descended from Alice Liddell — the real life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s famed novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. But cruel jokes about dormice and tea parties can’t compare to the fact that Alyssa hears the whispers of bugs and flowers … the same quirk which sent her mother to a mental institution years before.

When her mother takes a turn for the worse and the whispers grow too strong for Alyssa to bear, she seeks the origins of their family curse. A set of heirlooms and a moth tied to an unusual website lead Alyssa and her gorgeous best friend / secret crush, Jeb, down the rabbit hole into the real Wonderland, a place more twisted and eerie than Lewis Carroll ever let on.

There, creepy counterparts of the original fairytale crew reveal the purpose for Alyssa’s journey, and unless she fixes the things her great-great-great grandmother Alice put wrong, Wonderland will have her head.

How AWESOME does this book sound? Not only does this book look fantastic, but the author is a rock star and I urge everyone to check it out and her, because I love supporting awesome authors and she definitely is one.
